It was exceptionally hot for the 12th
of June that day in the year 1894, but the little group of men and
women gathered together in the village of Ganado, Texas, didn't mind
the heat. They waited with joy in their hearts for the arrival
of three men from Wharton, Texas, who were coming that day to help
them organize a Baptist Church.
They finally came -- Bro. R. P. Davant,
Bro. R. A. Partan, and the Missionary of the Colorado Baptist
Association, Bro. J. P. Rutledge.
Bro. Davant preached the sermon, then
the little group was called into a business meeting. Bro.
Davant was elected Moderator and Bro. Rutledge Clerk. One by
one they came forward to place their names upon the first Church
Roll of the First Missionary Baptist Church of Ganado, Texas, as
follows:
Brother G. Wicklund
Brother A. Brinkley
Brother Otto Tiegreen
Sister Ellen Wicklund
Sister Elizabeth Tiegreen
Sister McGowen
Sister Jane Sundelius
Sister Margaret Babcook
Eight people who loved Christ so much
that they had enough courage and faith to organize HIS Church.
After adopting the Articles of Faith
and a Covenant, they were declared organized by the Moderator, they
they all stood together and sang "How Firm A Foundation Ye Saints of
the Lord" and extended to one another the right hand of church
Fellowship.
"THUS WAS BORN THE FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH OF GANADO, TEXAS"
